I’ve been struggling for a few years now to get my son an evaluation through school and through his doctor for his neurodivergences. He has clear difficulties sitting still and making eye contact, and didn’t really speak until he was four. He caught up on language, but trying to get him to sit still or participate in a classroom setting is still a nightmare.

Right now he is testing in the 99th percentile on both reading and math, so he’s not falling behind, but he’s not able to pay attention or focus on anything in class. He just sits there and repeats “I want to go home, I want to go home, I want to go home” or runs around or tries to escape out of class. His teacher is out of ideas. Everyone is out of ideas. I can help, but because of covid, I’m not allowed into his classroom.

Hopefully, with this IEP, we’ll be able to get him some actual support, and maybe school won’t be quite so intimidating and frustrating for him. I’m not sure what else to do though, because trying to navigate the medical system to get him an Official Diagnosis is a bloody nightmare, and I feel like everywhere we turn, I’m fighting red tape and rules and everyone wanting us to jump through hoop after hoop, while admitting that there is, in fact, clear neurodivergences at play that need addressing.

I don’t know why they need to make it so difficult.
