Somehow I ended up with a baby squirrel in my shirt yesterday. It would not leave.
Normally around this time of year, squirrels this age get a little curious. This one was different though. He wasn’t just curious, he was obsessed. He did not want to leave me. No matter how much I tried to encourage him to climb one of the trees in my backyard and rejoin nature, he insisted on running back and burrowing into my shirt.

When I realized that he insisted on staying near humans, and showed zero fear of cats or dogs, it became clear that he needed to go to a rehabber where he could learn how to be a proper squirrel.

I’m not going to lie, a large part of me wanted to keep him, since it really felt like he chose to be with me. But when you deal with any animal, you have to put your own ego aside and do what is best for the animal, even if it doesn’t line up with what you want. As much fun as it would have been to have a pet squirrel that loves riding on me, it would not have been fair to the little guy.

So I called a friend of mine and we made a trip 45 minutes away to a rehabber. The little dude spent the entire trip nestled in my shirt, napping.

I hope he’ll enjoy his time with other baby squirrels and soon learn how to be a grown up squirrel and do grown up squirrel things that don’t involve snuggling up with me.

I’ll go back to working on my garden and waving at the adorable creatures that make my backyard their home. Hopefully I’ll be able to love them from a distance, and not from inside my shirt.
